Symphony x 1994

Symphony X se fundó en New Jersey, Estados Unidos, en abril de 1994. A principios de 1994, Michael Romeo (ex Gemini) grabó un demo titulado The Dark Chapter, el cual consistía en unas cuantas canciones compuestas y ejecutadas por él mismo. La grabación atrajo algo de atención, suficiente como para que Romeo reclutara al bajista Thomas Miller, al batería Jason Rullo, al vocalista Rod Tyler y, finalmente, al teclista Michael Pinella.

Su álbum homónimo fue grabado aquel mismo año, y lanzado en Japón por el ya difunto sello discográfico Zero Corporation. El álbum fue recibido positivamente en Japón y en algunos mercados europeos.

El segundo álbum, The Damnation Game apareció 6 meses después. El cantante Rod Tyler dejó la banda y fue sustituido por Russell Allen, quien influenció de una forma notable el estilo de la banda, enfatizando el lado clásico de Symphony X.

Su tercer disco es The Divine Wings of Tragedy. Este es para mucha gente, el mejor disco de la banda hasta el momento, el más completo, el más desarrollado y donde más expresión musical coexiste con el shred y otras técnicas progresivas. Pero independientemente de opiniones personales, podemos afirmar que a partir de The Divine Wings of Tragedy, la banda encuentra su camino dentro del progresivo melodico-neoclásico y logra descubrir todo lo que puede llegar a hacer. Éste disco tomó mucho tiempo en ser grabado, principalmente debido a su complejidad. Las sesiones comenzaron en 1996 y fueron finalizadas al año siguiente. La crítica positiva por parte de la prensa sirvió para que Symphony X lograra establecerse en Europa, mientras que su éxito en Japón continuó creciendo.
